If you are planning a new driveway, drainage is not an optional extra. Get it wrong and you could face planning trouble, a flooded garage, or water running off your drive into the road. Here is a straightforward guide to when a soakaway is needed, when it is not, and what the alternatives are.
You need somewhere lawful for rainwater to go, and a soakaway is the most common solution when the driveway itself cannot absorb it. Under permitted development rules in England, you can lay a new or replacement driveway over 5 square metres without planning permission only if the surface is permeable, or if runoff is directed to a permeable area such as a lawn, border or soakaway within your own boundary. If water from an impermeable drive would run onto the public highway or into the mains drainage, you need planning permission, and the council will usually push you towards sustainable drainage anyway.
So the honest answer is: not always a soakaway specifically, but always a drainage plan. A block paved drive on a free draining sub base may not need one at all, while a tarmac or concrete drive on a sloping Cornish plot almost certainly needs a soakaway or a linear drain feeding one.
A soakaway is essentially an underground void, these days usually plastic crates wrapped in geotextile rather than the old rubble filled pit, that stores rainwater and lets it seep into the surrounding ground. It suits driveways where the surface is impermeable, where the plot slopes towards the house or road, or where there is no lawn or planted area conveniently placed to take the runoff.

Costs depend heavily on access, dig depth, ground conditions and how far the soakaway sits from the drive. As a rough guide, a straightforward domestic soakaway with a channel drain often lands somewhere in the region of 800 to 2,500 pounds as part of wider driveway works, but rock near the surface, hand dig access or contaminated spoil can push that up. Any quote given without seeing the ground is a guess, which is why a site visit and a percolation test come first.
